Why do you need tree pruning?
We like to think of regular pruning as the health checkup and touch of TLC that keeps every tree smiling. It’s specialist work that needs to be done by a trained team of professionals, which is exactly where we come in.
Here’s our top 3 reasons you need tree pruning today:
Maintain Your Curb Appeal – Pruning a tree is like giving it a haircut and making sure all of those troublesome split ends are gone for good. We keep everything in check to create an appearance that’s neat, tidy, and uniform when viewed from every angle
Protect Your Home – High winds have a habit of snapping weak branches and sending them towards your roof and windows, and that’s the last thing we want. Our experts take care of any compromised branches to protect your property the smart way
Keep Your Tree Healthy – Ever wondered how trees can catch diseases when they’re covered in all that ultra-tough bark? Rubbing branches that haven’t been pruned and separated are one of the leading causes of disease because they create enticing entry points for all sorts of bugs and germs. We make sure they’re caught early and dealt with the right way
When does your tree need pruning?
Our team can make recommendations based on the exact type and size of tree you have, allowing you to take it easy while we handle the hard work.
If you want us to prune dead branches and significantly cut back a tree on your property, we always advise waiting for the dormant period. This is the time of year when the tree hibernates and doesn’t grow. For the vast majority of trees in your neighbourhood, this will start around late autumn and last right through the winter months.
Extensive pruning and tree trimming in the spring will lead to faster healing and regrowth, potentially requiring a second visit in time for the summer.

What tree pruning restrictions are there in south Brisbane?
There are two types of tree classification — private (on your land) and council (on public land) — and what you can do varies from one area to the next. Here are the key points you need to know about:

Council Trees
- Any tree on land owned by the council is also owned by the council and will be protected under the Natural Assets Local Law 2003 (NALL)
- You cannot prune, trim, or remove these trees without written permission from the City Council — this includes street trees that are right outside your home, even if they are overhanging your property boundary, footpath, or driveway
- Where we’re based in Brisbane, this will take the form of a council-issued permit. Our experts will follow the council’s guidance on pruning and trimming for each tree type
- If you are concerned about the need to trim trees by powerlines, this is carried out by Energex for all council trees within 1 m of any powerlines
- If you are concerned about ease of access in your wider neighbourhood, the City Council has the following guidelines for pruning low hanging branches (subject to permit):
- • 2.4 metre clearance to allow pedestrian access on all footpaths
- 4.5 metre clearance on all residential roads and bikeways
- 5 metre clearance on all local arterial roads
Private Trees
- Trees that are on your own land can still be protected and require permits for pruning
- You can apply for a permit via an online form on the Brisbane City Council or via email to the Environment Management Team at Brisbane City Council
- Check if a tree is protected by searching the Queensland Heritage Register online
- Common protected trees include: gum trees, jacaranda trees, and silky oak trees
- You have the right to invoke the common law right of abatement if your neighbour’s tree overhangs into property boundary. If a friendly chat doesn’t do the job, you can issue them with a Notice for Overhanging Branches and give them 30 days to respond.
- After this timeframe expires, you can hire someone else to trim and prune and then recover as much as $300 at your neighbour’s expense
Please note that in south Brisbane there exemptions from having a permit if a protected tree poses an immediate threat, is dead and at risk of falling over, or is a fire risk due to its location.
